GET HANDS-ON, GROW WITH CONFIDENCE
The right growing medium gives mycelium room to spread after the grain has colonised. Our pre-prepared CVG substrate is designed to make that next stage simpler.
01 What is mushroom substrate?
Substrate is the growing medium that fully colonised grain spawn is mixed into. It gives the mycelium more space to spread before the fruiting stage.
02 What does CVG stand for?
CVG stands for coco coir, vermiculite and gypsum. Our pre-prepared blend is hydrated and sterilised, so you can use it as directed without preparing the ingredients yourself.
03 How do I use CVG substrate?
Mix it with fully colonised grain spawn, following the product guide for your setup. It’s commonly used with a monotub.
04 Can I inoculate the CVG bag directly with culture?
No. The CVG substrate is intended to be mixed with fully colonised grain spawn, rather than inoculated on its own.
05 Do I need grain spawn as well as substrate?
Yes, you’ll need fully colonised grain spawn to use the CVG substrate. Grain spawn is available separately, or you can look for a bundle that includes both.
06 Which mushroom varieties can I grow with CVG?
The blend is designed for gourmet varieties such as Lion’s Mane, Oyster and Shiitake. Use a suitable gourmet culture and follow the growing guidance for your chosen variety.
07 How should I store the substrate if I’m not using it straight away?
Use it soon after delivery if possible. If you need to store it, keep the sealed bag in the fridge. It should last at least 12 months when stored this way.
08 What should I do if the substrate isn’t colonising?
Check the troubleshooting guide first, as timing and conditions can affect colonisation. If you still need help, contact our team with your order details and a clear photo of the bag.
